There is some debate regarding where the world’s first coins were produced, but most experts agree that the appearance of the first coins were in Lydia in Asia Minor, or present day Turkey.  These first coins were actually ingots of electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, which was found in the region. These early stamped ingots evolved into standardized coins used to encourage commerce and promote civic pride. “Ancients” is a general term for the earliest coins of the world struck between 600 BC and 500 AD. It is a very specialized field of numismatics, with a great range in value. Common, low grade, specimens can be purchased for under $25, while very rare, high grade, coins sell for hundreds of thousands.  Because of their link to world history, Ancient coins are amongst the most fascinating in all of Numismatics.
